    What happened lately

The recent economic data from the United States portrays a mixed picture, with some positive signals overshadowed by underlying challenges. Initial Unemployment Insurance Claims have increased, suggesting some strain in the labor market. However, Consumer Spending has shown a noticeable increase, indicating strong consumer confidence and willingness to spend. Additionally, Pending Home Sales have surged, reflecting robust activity in the housing market. Despite these positive trends, the U.S. GDP for the first quarter fell compared to the previous quarter, pointing to overall economic contraction. The decrease in the PCE Price Index, excluding food and energy, points to cooling inflation, yet the GDP Price Index saw significant growth. These mixed signals, including a decline in the Chicago Purchasing Managers’ Index, illustrate an economy experiencing inflationary pressures with some sectorial weakness, which could trigger various policy responses.

The latest movements in GBPUSD reflect the reaction to the U.S. economic data releases and overall market sentiment. As the British pound fell against the U.S. dollar, this decline was partly influenced by the nuanced economic indicators from the U.S., especially the drop in the GDP annual rate, and data showing mixed economic health. With anticipation surrounding the upcoming Nonfarm Payroll Employment report, which has high impact potential, traders and investors are likely positioning themselves cautiously. The recent drop in GBPUSD could also signify a shift in risk perception, with the dollar seen as a comparatively safer haven amid uncertain economic forecasts. The outcome of the Nonfarm Payroll report will be pivotal in determining the near-term trajectory of GBPUSD, influencing market expectations about the U.S. labor market and potential Federal Reserve actions.

What can we expect from GBPUSD today?

GBPUSD on Thursday dropped -0.39% to 1.32710. Price is below 9-Day EMA while Stochastic is falling.

Updated daily direction for GBPUSD looks bearish as the pair posted lower in Thursday trading session.

Looking ahead for the day, immediate support level is at S1 1.3239 with break below could see further selling pressure towards S2 at 1.32069. To the upside, with the current momentum bearish, we prefer to look at breakout of the recent daily high of 1.33453 as a potential indicator of buying interest. Failure to break the resistance level would continue to echo bearish sentiment. A close below 1.32601 would indicate selling pressure.

For the week to-date, take note that GBPUSD is mixed as compared to the prior week.
